The
process we use to craft our designs The
raw materials---then When we first started in this business,
we bought finished mesquite on the open market. The mesquite we
could find was generally high quality, but it was difficult to
consistently locate in the quantities we needed for our business.
The raw materials---now
Our customers are discriminating---and so are we. In order to
maintain our quality at an exceptionally high level, we made a
conscious decision to broaden our search for a consistent supply
of unique material, and we wound up going directly to the source.
We located a supplier in South Texas who spends a very substantial
amount of time searching for the mesquite we use. The type of
mesquite wood (rare burl, including mistletoe) we utilize to build
our furniture has been scientifically aged by the fine folks at
Texas A & M, and is generally about 150-180 years old. Almost
all of our wood is hand picked rare burl-it's generally much more
eye catching than plain straight-grain wood, and we spare no expense
in locating the most unique pieces of burl mesquite in Texas,
and therefore the most unique on this planet. We do use straight-grain
wood for table legs and mantles and in some of our tables, desks
and other items when a customer specifically requests it.
After we have spent long hours locating our wood, the work has
only just begun. All of our raw wood-"raw" meaning still in log
form and not having been milled---is initially fumigated to kill
any bugs or larvae that might be nesting in the wood.
Next, we spend many hours milling our logs to ensure that we identify
and highlight the finest and most unique grain patterns possible
in the wood. This is a long, painstaking process, but it helps
us to identify any pieces that might apply to an upcoming project,
such as distinctive book-matched grain, a specific design or imperfection,
etc.
After we have carefully examined and milled our raw logs, they
are placed in a kiln, dried and de-humidified at 140 degrees Fahrenheit
for approximately 5-7 weeks, depending on moisture content and
the size of the pieces. This ensures that the final product you
will place in your home is stable with regard to moisture content,
and also provides one more layer of defense against any bug or
pest infestations.
Crafting our Furniture
Fine furniture has had many definitions over the years. The definition
we adhere to is to handcraft the finest, most durable pieces of
furniture possible, with techniques that have existed for centuries
and occasionally augmented by modern day technology.
We use traditional joinery for most of our work; however we may
also incorporate new technology if it will actually make the product
better, but never for cost cutting or ease of construction purposes.
Our quality craftsmanship at Unique Mesquite features solid wood
construction, hand cut dovetailed drawers, mortise and tenon joints,
and a variety of custom touches to enhance the beauty of any article
of fine furniture we craft.
When you are looking for a one-of-a-kind piece that will be passed
down for generations to come, you can trust Unique Mesquite Furniture
Company to go to exacting lengths in the design and construction
of your custom piece. All furniture is an investment; our products
will be enjoyed not only by you, but successive generations of
your family.
High quality: You desire it--and we can provide it.
In search of a few more pennies per share of earnings, the commercial
furniture industry has been drifting into some very disturbing
waters in recent years. The current trend is to use thin veneers
and engineered wood products (such as fiberboard) in the construction
of all furniture, even furniture that is classified as "upscale"
or "high end". Even for lavish or elaborate items costing thousands
of dollars, this type of construction is commonplace. The inferiority
of many of the materials used in the construction of commercial
furniture industry is a fact, and the solution is to distance
yourself from this type of furniture.
A final word.
Many Internet and 'brick and mortar' retailers are not passionate
about authentic Texas furniture and/or mesquite furniture and
the associated history the way we are. Much of what you will encounter
in the way of mesquite or "genuine" Texas furniture these days
are sometimes mass produced in factories or made in Mexico and
imported by chains claiming to sell "unique Texas furniture".
These pieces may (or may not!) have equivalent decorative value
but lack the charm and heirloom qualities of the genuine, hand
made pieces that we craft at Unique Mesquite.
Should you encounter a 'unique' item offer that seems too good
to be true, please let us know and we will do our best to give
you our honest opinion of the item you are considering.
We thank you for considering us as your craftsmen. Whether you
pattern your design after a model we have already created or have
an original design direction you would like to pursue, we can
work with you to craft the one-of-a-kind article of furniture
you have always desired.
